Modesto City Schools, in California, posts its substitute jobs through Frontline Absence Management (the system many subs still call Aesop). If you're on the sub list here, everything below is about that board: what shows up on it, how it's written, and what it takes to get the jobs you actually want.

Schools that post substitute jobs

We've seen postings from 38 sites in Modesto City Schools. Exactly as they appear on the board, which matters if you filter by school name:

  • Beard Elementary School
  • Beyer High School
  • Bret Harte Elementary School
  • Burbank Elementary School
  • Davis High School
  • Downey High School
  • El Vista Elementary School
  • Elliott Alternative Education Center
  • ELLIOTT CONTINUATION
  • Enochs High School
  • Enslen Elementary School
  • Everett Elementary School
  • Fairview Elementary School
  • FRANKLIN ELEM
  • Fremont Elementary School
  • Garrison Elementary School
  • Gregori High School
  • Hanshaw Middle School
  • James Enochs High School - Summer School
  • Johansen High School
  • John Muir Elementary School
  • Kirschen Elementary School
  • La Loma Junior High School
  • Lakewood Elementary School
  • Mark Twain Junior High School
  • Marshall Elementary School
  • Martone Elementary School
  • Modesto High School
  • Orville Wright Elementary School
  • Robertson Road Elementary School
  • Roosevelt Junior High School
  • Rose Avenue Elementary School
  • ROVER - SPED
  • Shackelford Elementary School
  • Sonoma Elementary School
  • Special Education - Transitions
  • Tuolumne Elementary School
  • Wilson Elementary School

Spelling on the board is what counts. A district that writes “ELEM” instead of “Elementary”, or lists a campus under a classified-staff name, will trip up any filter that expects the official name. Copy the names above when you set preferences anywhere.

How Modesto City Schools writes its postings

Postings here look like this (real titles from the board, teacher names removed):

  • 5TH GRADE DLA TEACHER
  • AGRICULTURE
  • ART
  • BUSINESS EDUCATION
  • CAREER TECHNICAL EDUCATION
  • CLASSROOM TEACHER 7-8
  • CLASSROOM TEACHER 9-12
  • CLASSROOM TEACHER K-6
  • CLASSROOM TEACHER K6, DLA
  • CLASSROOM TECHER 9-12
  • COMBINATION CLASS
  • COMPUTER LITERACY

Grade levels are written into the title, so you can tell a kindergarten day from a fifth-grade day before you open it.

85% of those postings were full-day jobs (six hours or more). 55% started by 8 AM. 8% were multi-day assignments.

These numbers come from postings Sub Concierge watched for its members in this district. They describe what we saw, not every job the district ever posted, and they shift with the season.

How to get the jobs you want here

  • Get on the preferred lists. Teachers in Modesto City Schools can name preferred subs, and preferred subs see a posting before the rest of the list does. A short note to a teacher after a good day is the highest-return thing you can do.
  • Know the board's spelling. School names and titles above are how the district actually writes them. Filters and alerts that don't match the spelling silently miss jobs.
  • Decide your rules once. Which schools, which grades, full-day only or not, how much notice you need. Subs who decide in advance say yes in seconds; subs who decide per posting lose the race.
  • Cancel cleanly. Frontline tracks cancellations, and districts notice. Take fewer jobs and keep them.
